For 50 years, The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has set the global stage for breakthrough technologies. Every January in Las Vegas, Nevada, innovators in technology show off their latest efforts. More than 3,900 companies exhibited this year at the hands-on event. It drew around 170,000 attendees from 150 countries.

CES gives consumers a feel for what the tech giants are thinking and where they’re funneling their time and resources. Here are some of the standouts for 2018.

1. L’Oreal UV Sense

Overexposure to UV rays is a top health concern for people all over the world. From forgetting to reapply sunscreen to sitting in the sun unprotected for hours, sun damage can lead to cancer – but a product unveiled this year at CES could prevent it altogether.

If you’re a sun worshipper, the L’Oreal UV Sense is the gadget for you. A tiny sensor that’s worn on your thumbnail, the UV Sense syncs with a smartphone app. Fill out a skin-type profile in the app, put on the sensor, and head out into the sun.

The app and sensor will synced using near-field communication technology, transferring UV data to your smartphone. The sensor tracks how long you’ve been exposed and provides a running sun-safety score. The app will then alert you to reapply sunscreen or head for the shade throughout the day.

This incredible – and reusable – UV tracking device is battery-free. Wear it daily, and it’ll can analyze your habits and risks over time.

A stylish gadget equipped with Google Assistant, the Lenovo Smart Display is giving other smart home devices a run for their money.

The Lenovo Smart Display features either an 8- or 10-inch screen. Just say “Okay Google” to retrieve your calendar, browse the internet, control other smart devices, or get news updates. The touch screen will instantly bring up whatever information you request.

With 10-watt speakers, a camera for video calls, speedy internal processors, and internal storage, the Lenovo Smart Display learns as you use it. This innovative smart home gadget, which will be available to buy in just a few months, is designed to be the hub for every day, whether you’re cooking, making calls, or simply adjusting the thermostat.

3. Philips SmartSleep

Quality sleep is crucial to overall good health, and Philips is introducing a new gadget that will help you get the best possible sleep. The company introduced the SmartSleep at CES. It’s a cushiony foam headband worn at bedtime. As you wear the headband, it plays soothing tones to help you get a good night’s sleep.

The SmartSleep not only monitors your rest via a companion app, but it also maximizes your slow-wave sleep, the most physically restorative phase of your night. Wear the SmartSleep, and you’ll experience more deep sleep.

The headband is equipped with sensors that detect entry into deep sleep. Cued by algorithms, customized audio tones play softly through integrated speakers to boost slow waves. As a result, deep sleep is prolonged and more beneficial. Phillips worked with a team of neurologists to develop the product, which will hit shelves in 2018.

4. Byton Concept Car

If a little-known startup called Byton has its way, your car will no longer be a mere means of transportation – it’ll be a lounge. One of the most exciting announcements of CES 2018 was the Byton Concept Car. As more and more companies aim for self-driving cars, Byton decided to revolutionize the car itself.

The Byton car isn’t just technologically smart; it’s also intuitive. It collects information while you drive, recommending breaks for tired or distracted drivers. Facial recognition triggers the car to load all your specific preferences. And Amazon’s digital assistant, Alexa, will operate the vehicle in response to your voice and gestures, leaving you free to relax.

The stunning Byton Concept Car is expected to make its U.S. debut in 2020.
